Kara's sudden death and the reporter's question of "who do you want contributions sent to?" prompted me to respond
with "The Kara Hood Community Caring Foundation." Thus, Kara' s fund was born upon her death. I had been working
on a Community Caring initiative for over a year, and had collected some ideas in discussing it with her and her siblings.
KHCCF is a combination of the community outreach ministry we are doing at Common Grounds Coffee House, and Kara's (as well as
Chris, Jason and Emily's) efforts of working with youth and families to promote family values, caring and shared fun with a
faith centered value base.
KHCCF's purpose is to fund not-for-profit community activities that foster caring and service to others. The response to date
has been tremendous, with more than 200 people contributing over $20,000. Our intent is to distribute the money to non-profit
organizations making a difference in their communities. If friends of Kara's, for instance, are working with a non profit on a
particular project and need some funding... for camper scholarships, building a playground, neighborhood clean up, restoration
work, teaching grants or mentoring programs, activities for elderly, etc... they can contact us and submit a request for funds.
If the spirit of the project "fits" the intent of KHCCF, we will make a donation to the non-profit provided it is also
a registered 501 C 3.
Kara worked with inner city youth and we have already set up a scholarship fund at Camp Stella Maris to let inner city kids enjoy
the healthy and faith filled experience of summer camp. Friends of Kara have already gotten together for work parties, and people
have shared that they are going to tutor, take in a fresh air kid and coach a city soccer team this summer. Projects have already
taken place in Brooklyn, Rochester, Cazenovia, New York City, Boston and San Francisco. A few spirited people getting together
to serve and care for others is an easy way to begin to make a difference. In these and other ways Kara's spirit will live on.
