#27

27 was an important number for Kara and I. When I got to Trinity I, for some reason, chose a new field hockey number and opted for 27. Later I learned 27 was Kara’s lacrosse number. So for the few seasons that she played lax at Trinity we shared the same jerseys. I wore them in the fall and she in the spring. More than just a uniform number 27 became a pivotal point in our lives when we made plans for down the road. We were naive to believe that by the time we were 27 we’d be in the best shape of our lives. That was one of many proclamations that we made for our 27th years. Basically, we thought we’d be well on our ways to ‘growing-up’ by the time we hit two-seven. How overjoyed she would be to see how wrong we were. How much I miss naivity. It’s heartbreaking not be able to share in Kara’s 27th. Still I’ll muster up a celebration. Of all people Kara remains the most inspiring cause for celebration. I had to laugh thinking of her on her 27th, then her 47th, 67th, 87th. What’s funny is that I can, and always could, picture her at all those ages. I envisioned a still beautiful but, of course, older version of Kara at 87 as compared to 27. But, what made me smile is that I’m certain her spirit would have remained forever young. The Running Man would have never seen retirement. Fittingly, I woke up this morning thinking of Grandma Dorsey. In my mind she was waving good-bye. But, if you know Grandma Dorsey you know she never waves good-bye. She holds her hand up as high as she can reach and rather than waving she forms the symbol for I Love You with her hand. Instead of waving hello or good-bye she waves 'I Love You'. Love you Kara. Miss you always. 27
